Doctor Who Regeneration.

Doctor Who Regeneration

This was a short film that I made in the second year of university. The module was “dynamics and simulations” and required the use of Houdini, so I thought that a Doctor Who regeneration scene would be a good project to learn Houdini.

All of the live action shots were done on a large green screen with part of the console on a tripod so that the actor could interact with something. This ended up blending all of the elements together really well, along with the lighting. On set there was a bright orange light to the side and blue light in front of the actor. These were to provide light interaction of elements like the fire and the console with the actor.

All of the simulations and rendering were done in Houdini, the TARDIS was modelled and animated in Blender and textured in Substance 3D Painter, and the compositing was done in a combination of Nuke and DaVinci Resolve.

As my first project using Houdini, I’m really happy with how this turned out. There were some parts that don’t look completely photoreal and some simulations needed a bit more work, but a lot of the compositing looked decent and I’m really happy with how I managed to blend the CG and live action elements together.
